Themes of the month

One thing we're trying to do as a whole school is to follow one theme per month, having kids learn and explore those ideas, and then posting them in the hallway. This year's focus goes with our STEPP Goal 4.6: "The school and classroom environments reflect cultural awareness and understanding of cultural values of the students and community." Throughout 2015-2016, we are asking students to think about their own cultural identity: what it means to be Yup'ik (or not!), in the village of Kasigluk, attending Akiuk Memorial School? In other words, what does it mean to be  you, here, in this place, with al the history and past and culture you've inherited?

Below are some of our themes and photos from our hallway that demonstrate the theme:

November/Cauyarvik: NAMESAKES; WHO ARE YOU NAMED AFTER?
Cauga aterpet kang'ia?                    What does your name mean?
Kina aciutek'elrusiu?                       Who were you named after?
Aterpet tarenraanek nataqucugngauten?       Can you find a picture?
Qaillun ayuqesiu atria?
How are you like your name?
